What is stone pointing?

Stone pointing is the process of repairing and restoring the joints between stones in a masonry wall. Itinvolves removing the old mortar, cleaning the joints, and applying new mortar that matches the color,texture, and composition of the original. Stone pointing is important for preserving the structuralintegrity and aesthetic appearance of historic buildings. Stone pointing requires skill, patience, andattention to detail, as well as the use of appropriate tools and generally lime mortar materials. 3.5NHLtends to be the Lime Mortar of choice for stone houses and cottages.

How do you repoint stonework?

The process of repointing stonework encompasses the extraction of aged mortar from the gaps between the stones, subsequently replacing it with fresh mortar. The following steps outline the procedure for repointing a stonework:
– Preparation – protection to area and plants
– Chip or grind the old masonry mortar joint at appropriate depth, being careful not to damage the stonework
– Mix new mortar: Follow the instructions on the mortar mix packaging to create a consistent mixture. The new mortar should match the color and texture of the existing mortar.
– Application: Use the pointed trowel to place the new mortar into the joints. Press it firmly to ensure proper adhesion and fill the entire depth of the joint.
– Finishing: Use the trowel to shape and smooth the mortar to match the surrounding joints. The finish should be slightly concave to allow for water runoff.

How much does it cost to repoint a stone house?

Stone house walls are costed on the based on the number of days and the number of tradesmen will take to complete the job. The time taken varys – is your wall random laid stones or are they cut stones ? cut even shaped stone work can be as much as 25% quicker to complete the work. Has the stone shailed/corroded and needs descaling ? do you need time allocated to remove strap pointing that has been previously done and is on the brick edges ? How deep should you go when repointing?

The depth of repointing depends on the width of the mortar joints and the type of masonry. For brickwork, the old mortar should be removed to a depth of at least 15-20mm. For rubble stonework, the depth should be at least equal to the width of the joint and generally not less than 40mm. It is important to be careful when removing the old mortar, as going too deep can damage the original wall structure.

What is the best pointing for stone?

Generally speaking lime mortar is used for pointing stonework on a historical or home type structure, there always exception to the rule.

What can go wrong with repointing?

Mainly poor wor workmanship, the use of wrong materials, heavy rain downpours at the time the work is carried out,

What is the difference between pointing and repointing?

Pointing generally refers to the initial process of filling the gaps between bricks or stones with mortar during the construction of a wall.
Repointing, on the other hand, is the process of repairing existing pointing by removing the damaged mortar and refilling the joints with new mortar. Repointing is necessary when the existing mortar has become damaged or weathered over time, and helps to protect the wall from further damage and prolong its lifespan.

How long should repointing take?

The length of time it takes to repoint a wall depends on several factors such as the size of the wall, the material used, and the type of repointing.
Generally speaking a small mid terrace can take between 1-2 days to complete
Small 3 bed semi 4-6 days (ground floor & 1st floor)

Preparation

Prep area for dust control, remove old mortar and wash down. Cheshire Pointing will arrange a skip and scaffolding erecting if applicable.

Installation

Applying new mortar to an existing raked out joint is generally referred to as repointing. The traditional method of repointing was to push the mortar into the raked out space with a trowel or jointing tool

Clean up

Clean up and final wash down. Cheshire Pointing will arrange skip collection and scaffolding removal if applicable
